Million Dollar Domain Names

I’m sure every budding entrepreneur has heard of The Million Dollar Homepage - the tale of the man who brought a unique twist to an old concept. It’s a testament to the opportunities offered by the internet to any truly creative thinkers. This is a site that will be online for years to come as a digital artefact of ingenuity.

So anyway, to the point. How does this affect us today? Well, while the domain names used for The Million Dollar Homepage will be registered for some time to come, the domain names of all those that seized advertising opportunities may not. A simple tool to monitor every domain name linked to on the site could prove an interesting resource for domainers and internet opportunists. Given the domain names may have been more attractive when the site was more popular, but the site and it’s links will remain online for many years to come.

A simple bulk whois query should suffice — pull the domain names from the source code of the homepage, query their WHOIS and then record important details like the expiry date and use this to create a countdown timer to expiry. A small profit might be turned by offering site users the ability to ‘backorder’ or register domain names which are expiring or expired, either from affiliate sales or as a reseller level.

All in all, not the most exciting idea to open up again after the brief  article hiatus, but definitely some food for thought. I promise the next interval between posts won’t be so long!
